On Wednesday, April 24, 2013, the International Center at the University of Connecticut will co-sponsor a World Book Night/Daytime celebration during their regularly scheduled Coffee Hour at 2:30pm. Partnering with Laurie Tompkins from the IC, Ruth Hartunian-Alumbaugh will be distributing specially printed copies of her favorite book pick to international students.
World Book Night is technically the 23rd of April but the celebration on campus at U-Conn. will occur when students would normally be on campus and at the McMahon Hall (2011 Hillside Road, 06269) Coffee Hour. Ruth will be distributing her favorite book from the list of 30 books provided by the WBN event coordinators. Her top pick is “The Phantom Tollbooth.” Although the book is often thought of as a children’s book, the nuances in language and the humor in it can be very amusing for adults, too.
In being a book “giver”, Ruth was chosen by application to spread the “good word” of the benefits and blessings that reading has to offer. She has chosen to give her special books to international students at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. In giving out special complimentary copies, she hopes to share her love of reading and language with students who are not native English speakers. In fact, she plans to provide students with contact information so she can have an e-mail “discussion” when students have questions or need clarification about what they are reading.
Ruth’s hope is that students will enjoy the books as well as the special themed cake she will make for the occasion, too! She’ll be making her very own “Sunny Side Up Citrus Cake” shaped like an open book for the special afternoon. Baking and books; a perfect combination!
