The Alexander Technique is an alternative medicine educational discipline with therapeutic effects that studies bodily coordination, including psychological principles of awareness. It is applied for purposes of recovering freedom of movement, in the mastery of performing arts, and for general self-improvement affecting poise, impulse control and attention.
Paul Recker, M.AmSAT, will be conducting the workshop. Recker teaches the Alexander Technique at Song-a-Day Music. He has been a full-time musician since 1986, and began learning the Alexander Technique in 1998. Recker graduated from the Alexander Technique School New England (ATCNE) and is certified to teach the Technique by the American Society for the Alexander Technique (AmSAT).
Recker says that “We learn to do everything we do, usually at an unconscious level. For example, we don’t consciously think about what muscles to use and how much effort is required to coordinate the activities of walking, sitting, or playing an instrument. Often, we use more muscular effort than needed. At this workshop I will introduce tools the Alexander Technique has to offer to allow you to consciously relearn how to do what you do with reduced muscular tension.”
