Willimantic, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University College Bowl, founded in 1978 by recently retired professor Timothy Swanson, is a quiz competition for undergraduates representing various majors. The competition completed its 39th season on March 15 in the Student Center Theatre with six majors competing: economics, biology, history, math, biochemistry and political science.
The finalists for this year’s College Bowl were Team History versus Team Biology. Team History defeated Team Biology to win the championship, previously defeating Biochemistry and Political Science to get to the finals. The championship match saw the lead exchanged several times and it came down to the last few questions. Team History pulled away and secured the victory on the last question. The winning team included Patrick Thomson, Karolyn Rkarriganjobes, Shawn Batchelder and Matt Putnam.
The College Bowl questions covered a range of topics in academic subjects that Eastern students are exposed to as part of their liberal arts education. Questions come from different academic and non-academic areas, including questions about a student’s general knowledge (such as geography, foreign language, music, etc.) Each round consists of 16-18 questions with associated bonuses. Questions for this year included ones involving the knowledge of Latin words; distinguishing mottos from different states; identifying flags from different countries; and the Seven Wonders of the World. The College Bowl is organized and run by David Frye, professor of history.
