The Loft Artists Association invites you to submit works to:
“The Elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water”
The division of the world into four naturally occurring elements, from which all other matter is made, is attributed to Empedocles (c. 492-432 BC). This pre-Socratic philosopher and poet stated that the “earth, sea, air and the fiery aether of the heavenly bodies” were the basis of all that surrounds us. For centuries, humans used these elements to decode their world. There is no doubt about the importance of water, or the earth that we live upon, or the fire that warms us, or the air that we breathe.
Juror: Sophia Gevas, Director of the Gallery of Contemporary Art at Sacred Heart University. Sophia was the director for 23 years and has curated over 100 striking and innovative exhibits. She has also developed the Sculpture Walk, University Art Collection and executed nine voluntary Percent for Art Programs in Connecticut. A Co-founder of the Stamford Loft Artists Association, Sophia is currently Director of Outreach Education at the Silvermine Arts Center in New Canaan, Connecticut.
The Loft Artists Association (LAA) began in 1978 as the vision of three artists living and working in Stamford’s Yale & Towne Lock factory building. Today the 40 plus member non-profit organization of professional working artists, is recognized for their hard work and achievements in the arts. As a cultural institution the LAA offers many artistic and educational opportunities to the public, free of charge, including their annual Open Studios, community workshops, studio and gallery tours and new for 2014 “Elements” an annual juried show.
