Two Eastern Students Receive Awards in Eversource Connecticut Playwright Competition

May 6, 2016 by WindhamAreaArts

Willimantic, Conn. — Eastern Connecticut State University students Anthony Piccione and Deborah Stauffer have received awards for the plays they submitted in the Eversource Connecticut Playwright Competition, which received over 1,000 submissions. Eversource invited college students in Connecticut to submit a 25- to 30-minute play that supports the new eesmarts curriculum and mission. The vision of eesmarts is to develop an energy-efficient ethic among all school-aged students in Connecticut, encouraging them to incorporate energy-efficient practices and behaviors into their lives at home and at school.

“When I read the call for scripts by Eversource and the Capital Region Education Council I created an assignment that fulfilled the requirement of the competition,” said Communication Professor Edmond Chibeau. I then encouraged the students to submit their work. This is the kind of real world experience that goes along with a liberal arts education from Eastern.” Chibeau taught Piccione and Stauffer this semester in his class “Scriptwriting and Presentation,” a class that he created 10 years ago.

Piccione will also receive an award from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for his dramaturgy on the production of “Power Plays,” that was the first production in Eastern’s new Fine Arts Instructional Center.
