Coventry, CT – On Saturday, June 5th from 11 am to 2pm, visit the new Farmers’ Market at the Hale Homestead, now managed by the Town of Coventry in collaboration with Connecticut Landmarks! The market will run every Sunday from May through October. The mission of the Market is to provide a dynamic and sustainable marketplace for the exchange of high-quality, locally-grown and crafted products and services directly to the consumer. The Market also serves to promote local economic development and community enrichment by cultivating a vibrant gathering place offering education, artistic and social activities.
In March 2015, the Coventry Regional Farmers’ Market (CRFM) announced that the 2015 season would be its last at Hale Homestead. The Town of Coventry immediately jumped into action to accept the responsibility of taking over and managing a new farmers’ market at the Hale Homestead in 2016 and beyond. The Coventry Economic Development Commission formed a subcommittee of members and Town Staff to spearhead the planning required to successfully execute a municipally operated farmers’ market. In order to achieve that, the Town of Coventry has created the Coventry Farmers’ Market at Hale Homestead as the next evolution of a Market at Hale Homestead. By collaborating with Connecticut Landmarks, current and new volunteers, vendors, and local businesses as well as community and civic groups, we intend to build upon the success of the prior Market’s model to achieve a Market that everyone can continue to enjoy and be proud of.
June 5th also marks the celebration of the 261st birthday of Connecticut’s State Hero Nathan Hale: farm boy, school teacher and soldier/spy. Enjoy special activities including a parade of tractors, and a flag raising and ceremony by the Nathan Hale Fife & Drum Corps, free tours of the 1st floor tour of the Homestead, and of course birthday cake!
The Nathan Hale Homestead is located at 2299 South Street in Coventry, CT 06238 and is open for regular tours from May through October. For hours or more information, visit www.ctlandmarks.org; www.facebook.com/NathanHaleHomestead; call (860) 742-6917; or email hale@ctlandmarks.org.
