Willimantic, Conn. – From Oct. 6-11, the Performing Arts Department and Drama Society at Eastern Connecticut State University will present its first production of the semester, “Pornography,” by Simon Stephens.
The award-winning contemporary play offers an eerie and extraordinary portrait of the events of July 7, 2005, in London where several bombs went off in the London transport system, killing 56 people including the four bombers. Using the play to suggest that a catastrophe changes the collective ethos of a city, Stephens depicts the elation of the Olympics announcement mere days before the bombings in stark contrast to the devastation of the bombings as well as the events that followed. The title, which adds to the controversy of this production, represents the bombers alienation and objectification, something that is symptomatic of a consumerist culture, according to Stephens.
The show will run at 7:30 p.m. from Tuesday through Saturday, Oct. 6-10. There will also be a matinee on Sunday Oct. 11, matinee at 4 p.m. All shows in the Harry Hope Theatre, located in Shafer Hall.
Tickets are free for Eastern students; $5 other students and groups of 10 or more; $10 for Eastern faculty, stall, alumni, and senior citizens; and $15 for the general public. For reservations, call the Harry Hope Theatre box office at (860) 465-5123 or email theatrebox@easternct.edu.
