Willimantic – EASTCONN’s Capitol Theater Arts Academy (CTAA) and ACT arts magnet high school invite experienced, young area dancers to participate in an Open Workshop and public performance by the Danielle Russo Dance Company on Sat., May 17, 2014 at EASTCONN’s Capitol Theater, 896 Main St., Willimantic. The New York City-based modern dance company, led by professional choreographer Danielle Russo, will offer a two-hour workshop starting at 3 p.m. for intermediate and advanced- level dancers who have four or more years of experience.Russo, who found her passion in dance at an early age, was born and raised in Lebanon,Conn., and attended Lebanon Public Schools before obtaining degrees in dance from both New York University and Hollins University. The Capitol Theater workshop, titled “Ritual Flow,” is based in modern dance techniques and is derived from Limon, Bartenieff and release-inspired training. The workshop is $20 per dancer. Young participants will also take part in an installation piece with the Danielle Russo Dance Company in an evening performance of “Since thou was precious in my sight,” which begins at 7 p.m. Tickets to the evening performance, which is open to the public, are $15 per person.
The Danielle Russo Dance Company is a project-based dance theater ensemble whose multifaceted repertory ranges from evening-length proscenium to durational installation productions. Highlights from the company’s national and international tours include performances at the American Dance Festival (Durham, North Carolina), Jacob’s Pillow (Becket, Mass.) and The Yard (Chilmark, Mass.), among others. Her company has also touredinternationally at venues in Austria, France, Belgium, Sweden, Spain, South Korea, Canada andCentral America.Writing in The Village Voice, dance critic and choreographer Deborah Jowitt praisedRusso for her “dramatically eloquent athleticism,” while dancer and critic Bayla Gottesmanof The Uptempo Magazine hailed Russo’s work as “the fervent exploration of emotional endurance…”.
