Summer Programs in Drawing, Pottery and Jazz at the Community School of the Arts

STORRS, June 26, 2013 –The Community School of the Arts (CSA) at the University of Connecticut in Storrs is offering a variety of fun and educational half-day and whole-day week-long programs, and mini-workshops for children of all ages from June through August..

Award winning artist Nancy Cooke Bunnell will teach a 2-D Media Workshop, a full-day, full-week of painting and drawing for young artists of all levels of experience. The week of July 29-August 2 will be divided into strengthening skills in the studio at UConn’s School of Fine Arts and exploring the many art offerings of UConn’s main campus by foot or shuttle bus. Site visits may include the Benton Art Museum and UConn‘s farms, galleries and beautifully landscaped grounds for inspired drawing and painting still-lifes, landscapes, and abstracts. The fee for the week is $395.

Also offered during the week of July 29-August 3, students ages 10-14 can create both functional (cups, bowls, plates) and sculptural forms in the pottery Wheel Workshop on CSA’s Depot campus with CSA Instructor and artist Sherie Gage from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. for $395.

For instrumental jazz students entering grades 7-10 who wish to gain more experience in jazz improvisation, style and technique there’s the ever-popular Week of Jazz: “Boot Camp” from July 29-August 2, 9:00a.m.-4:00 p.m. daily. This intensive week-long workshop challenges young jazz musicians to grow musically and to improve their skill on their instrument and at improvising. CSA jazz instructors and guest teaching artists will work with students in both classroom and applied small combo settings. The fee for the week is $475 and is taught on UConn’s main campus in the Music Department, DRMU, and von der Mehden Hall with a Friday afternoon performance by the student ensembles.
