EASTCONN’s Capitol Theater Arts Academy (CTAA) has just opened registration for its summer programming, which includes the five-week Summer Musical Theater Program presenting Singin’ in the Rain, as well as CTAA’s Summer Dance classes. For the first time, CTAA is also seeking student musicians to perform in its Summer Musical Theater Program pit orchestra.
CTAA is housed at EASTCONN’s historic Capitol Theater, 896 Main St., Willimantic.
The Summer Musical Theater Program runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, starting July 9 and ending Aug. 11, 2012. Early and post-program childcare is available.
CTAA’s Summer Dance classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 26 through August 23; these classes are not part of the Summer Musical Theater Program.
This year’s Summer Musical Theater Program for students who will be entering grades 4-12, will produce Singin’ in the Rain, based on the award-winning 1952 movie by the same name. Students will learn about the facets of musical theater, as well as the year 1927, when Hollywood was making its historic transition from silent movies to “talkies.” Each day of the students’ five-week, CTAA summer journey will be filled with acting, singing, tap dancing, technical theater and creative learning extensions that will be based on the show. Students will present shows to the public on August 9, 10, and 11.
For the first time, CTAA is seeking student musicians with four or more years’ experience for its Summer Musical Theater Program pit orchestra. Students will work with professional musicians for two weeks, from July 30 to August 11, 2012, as they learn the music for Singin’ in the Rain. The production is seeking young musicians who play the bass, cello, percussion, clarinet, flute, piccolo, alto saxophone, trombone, trumpet, violin and viola. Auditions for the pit orchestra will be held May 19, 2012, at 1 p.m., at the Capitol Theater. Schedule an audition at 860-465-5636 x1023 or at firstname.lastname@example.org .
In the relaxed atmosphere of CTAA’s Summer Dance classes, children can either explore a variety of different dance styles or register for a favorite class. CTAA’s three-week, five-week or eight-week sessions include: Exploring Dance; Tap & Jazz Combo; Jazz/Modern; Hip-Hop; Intermediate Ballet; Pointe & Choreography; and Costume Design for ages 4 and up.
CTAA serves northeastern Connecticut residents, ages 3 and up. Classes are taught year-round by some of Connecticut’s finest arts professionals, who help students explore the arts through dance, theater, cartooning, creative writing and individual music lessons. Classes are offered in both fall, spring and summer sessions.
CTAA is an arts education outreach program of EASTCONN, a public, non-profit Regional Educational Service Center that has been serving the education needs of northeastern Connecticut schools and communities since 1980. Visit www.eastconn.org.
